The only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. Drier, quieter and with the best chance of seeing wildlife in the lower forest sections.

Detailed Itinerary
Day by day
- Day 1
Rongai Gate → Simba Camp
Quiet northern approach from 2,020m to Simba Camp (2,625m). 3–4 hrs.
- Day 2
Simba → Kikelewa Camp
Climb across moorland to Kikelewa (3,679m). 6–7 hrs.
- Day 3
Kikelewa → Mawenzi Tarn
Short climb to dramatic Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m) for acclimatisation. 3–4 hrs.
- Day 4
Mawenzi → Kibo Hut
Cross the lunar saddle to Kibo Hut (4,700m). 5–6 hrs.
- Day 5
Summit → Horombo Hut
Midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), descend to Horombo (3,720m). 12–14 hrs.
- Day 6
Horombo → Marangu Gate
Final descent, certificates and transfer to Arusha. 5–6 hrs.
